ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE. (BUT A LITTLE CHOCOLATE NOW AND THEN NEVER HURTS).
Charles M. Schulz

justin a.c. finch-fletchley III, esq
jff (pb: mitch hewer)</a>
general
FULL NAME: Justin Augustus Charles Finch-Fletchley II, Esquire
MEANING: Justin: derived from roman justus, meaning justice; named for st. justin martyr, a gentlemanly saint that sacrificed his life rather than give up his beliefs.
Augustus: derived from latin augere ("to increase"), meaning "great" or "venerable".
Charles: derived from germanic name karl, meaning man.
Finch: meaning songbird; name given to a cheerful person. his father's family name.
Fletchley: derived from fletch, the feather that balances an arrow. his mother's family name.
NICKNAME: Likes: Justy, Tin-Tin (though only his mother is allowed to call him that, mind); Abhors: Just about everything else.
GENDER: Male. Has been for 20 years and not planning on changing it any time soon.
DATE OF BIRTH: March 29th, 1980.
AGE: 20
CURRENT RESIDENCE: Born in Northampton and raised in both the large, quiet Finch manor in Northampton and his mother's own spacious estate in neighbouring Cambridgeshire. As an adult, he's decided to live in the small Wizarding corners of West End, his favorite place in the world, in a studio apartment he can more than afford.
SEXUALITY: Quite queer. His attitude toward it is much the same as many upperclass men -- it's alright if you do it, so long as you don't bloody well talk about it -- and as such he's really only "come out" to his close friends and family (excluding his father who demands an heir). Everyone's sort of suspected for quite some time, however, as Justin is unrelentingly camp.
BLOODLINE: Not a drop of magical blood in him, as far as he knows; both of his parents are utterly English, one a Sir and the other a Lady, so he's got good blood as far as the Muggle world cares. Not that it matters much. As far as the new Wizarding regime is concerned, however, he's closely related to Ernie Macmillan's nine-years-of-Pure-blood family.
PET: A medium-sized owl, ironically named Sparrow.
physical
EYES: He has his mother's eyes; light blue and relatively enigmatic without his dramatic facial expressions. Justin's eyes are pretty, as far as eyes go, though hardly remarkable.
HAIR: Very blonde, slightly curly and usually worn just past his ears.
COMPLEXION: Justin's skin is clear and very fair.
HEIGHT: 5'10". Well, 5'9 3/4", but close enough. Yes, he knows he's short; don't bring it up.
WEIGHT: 141 lbs
BUILD: Justin has never been really impressive body-wise. He's healthy-looking, with an average amount of muscle definition, but he only works out enough to look fit and really isn't too physically intimidating. His mother is only a shade shorter than he is, but her elongated features make her appear much taller; unfortunately, Justin's build is predominantly Finch, and thus he looks every inch of his 5'10" -- perhaps 5'11" on a good day.
POSTURE: His posture partially makes up for his unfortunate height; he was raised by a Sir and a Lady, so slouching is nearly a crime in his family.
HERITAGE: Both of his parents are pure upperclass English; he's got that Esquire tacked onto his name for a reason. As for his bloodline, magically speaking, he's a complete and total Muggle.
SENSE OF STYLE: He has the look of a thoroughbred Englishman, a look that carries through to his wardrobe. Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier -- Justin dresses like an utter prep, and may or may not be a little obsessive over his clothes. He's a clothing connoisseur, and will spare no expense for the sake of his image (or the image of his friends; he's more than willing to extend a hand to those in dire need of stylistic assistance), and his extensive wardrobe contains a multitude of outfits for any occasion. He's meticulous about that sort of thing, half because of his job and half because he just likes looking good. He's still got a strong love of his house, and usually wears Hufflepuff-coloured ties, if any. Justin still favors Muggle clothes over Wizarding robes, but, as he's trying to be inconspicuous, he wears robes nonetheless.
TYPE OF SPEECH: His manner of speaking is fairly posh, though years at Hogwarts (which features a smorgasboard of dialects) have given him a sort of myriad accent. He's from Northampton, so he's got that pinched, posh sort of public school boy accent, though technically Hogwarts wasn't a public school; if the way he dressed weren't enough of a tip-off as to his financial status, his accent certainly is. Despite this, Justin speaks quickly and casually, with a laugh running through his words, and uses slang from various parts of England (it comes with being a socialite).
OVERUSED PHRASES: "Ooh-er", "Well, that's interesting".
NOTABLE POSESSIONS: Two gaudy family rings on his left hand and his fathers family crest, his mothers family crest, his zodiac symbol, a small silver horseshoe chain, a heart and two halves of two seperate 'best friends' hearts, all on a small silver chain looped around his left wrist. It's looped around twice; he used to wear it around his neck, but there was this incident with a Niffler...
PHYSICAL HEALTH: He has no congenital conditions, and he eats relatively well for an young man, but he's by no means an athlete in his prime. His health is fair.
personal

ZODIAC: Aries
• Hufflepuff Ariens have an extreme abundance of energy; however, the usual Hufflepuff tendency to work hard out of duty is modified by the Aries tendency to value play over work. Therefore, expect long periods of playfulness and seeming indolence punctuated by brief, manic bursts of industry. These Hufflepuffs may also be more ambitious and socially aggressive than average, making them clear leaders in their House. Their emotional warmth, open hearts, madcap sense of humour, and quirky independence will endear them to many people, but their naivete makes for easy exploitation by more ruthless sorts of people.

PERSONALITY: Justin is, first and foremost, the apotheosis Hufflepuff. He embodies his house, and any prejudices one has against Hufflepuff, one has against him. Hard-working, loyal, patient; he's also an excellent friend, a generally kind and accepting person, and self-confident (if a bit interdependant), but that just comes with the territory. To be frank, he's everything a Hufflepuff can be -- both the good and the bad. Justin is also naïve, petulant, and occasionally blinded by his emotions. Justin is a selfless person; used to having nice things and not in any immediate danger of having his wealth taken away, Justin is unnaturally willing to give in enormous quantities to friends, even mere acquaintences. It comes, perhaps, with the Hufflepuff virtue of being good-hearted. This also means that he's easily taken advantage of, though once he realizes his toes are being stepped on you've earned yourself an eternal grudge -- Hufflepuffs never forget. It comes with the loyalty thing.

Something like the new poster child for Hufflepuff after Cedric died, Justin had (and maintains) a wide social circle that spans many houses, and prides himself on knowing a lot of people; since he'll befriend anyone, Justin usually knows whats going on intrapersonally speaking, and though he tends to shy away from gossiping himself (he does it, he just doesn't like it), he's something like a headquarters of social knowledge. His ability to make nice with all sorts of people comes both from being raised a gentleman and from his extroverted nature; Justin loves people, really, and loves life. He has a shining optimism that, even in the face of the most dire crisis the Wizarding World has seen in decades, keeps him from going absolutely mad, as he surely would otherwise.

Justin is, in a word, a child, with both the pros and cons of the title. Though he can turn around and be mature when needed, he prefers to retain his child-like sense of enthusiasm. He loves to laugh, and though not a prankster, does have sense of humour -- really, it's the spice of life. His joie de vivre is one of the things that drew people to him when he was a youth, and one of the qualities that eventually led to his status as Hufflepuff Golden Boy in his fifth year. For all the good there is in Justin, however, there's also a bit of bad; he can be unbearably petulant, and when confronted with a strong emotion he's susceptible to completely losing his head. Usually a fairly reasonable person, his emotions tend to get the best of him -- Justin still has the ability to be unbearably cruel, though it's not one he's proud of; once his rage has let down, his first act is usually to apologize.

Justin looks at the world with a childlike wonder. He had and still has a reputation for being infuriatingly optimistic, and though prone to fits of depression like everyone else, he usually remains confident that things will change for the better. Around friends and close acquaintences, Justin still has the mentality of a dorky 13-year-old -- still, in an age where 17 year olds have seen things some 50 year olds haven't, it's something of an enviable trait. A curious blend of extrovert and aristocrat, Justin has a diplomatic ability to make nice with everyone (or at least, try to make nice with everyone).

He's also a bit of a dork -- well, perhaps an enormous dork. He constantly makes references to both Wizarding and Muggle pop culture, and his penchant for the dramatic means he's willing to make a fuss over just about anything. Perhaps the word is 'spastic', or maybe just 'melodramatic'. The war has sapped a bit of his energy, as has the constant stress of trying to hide who he is and his paranoia about being found out and dragged back off to the Ministry to be interrogated and poked with sticks, but he's still blindingly optimistic, the bugger.

HABITS:
• Nibbles his thumbnails, though he's trying to stop because uneven fingernails aren't really unflattering.
• Sits like a girl, with his legs crossed at the knee, and gets hell for it.
• Prone to fits of spontaneity; he plans to do things, like any good socialite, but when bored he won't hesitate to throw an impromptu party ("What's the occasion?" "Thursday.") or ride the metro as far as it will take him. He keeps his evenings occupied.

INTROVERT/EXTROVERT: All kinds of extrovert. He prefers to maintain a lot of friendships (or, as he puts it, "I like being liked"), and is rarely shy about meeting new people. His sense of humour and general charisma usually means that the sentiment is returned but, as an extrovert, Justin has learned to take the social failures and celebrate the victories. He has his father's ambitious socialite nature with his mother's open-heartedness; a good match if there ever was one.
PHOBIAS: Ophidiophobia in a mildly unhealthy extreme -- just looking at a picture of a snake makes him somewhat uncomfortable; astraphobia, though only of lightning and not thunder or storms in general; mild cynophobia.
SELF-ESTEEM: Justin's pretty blindingly self-confident, though he does harbor a few insecurities. For the most part, he loves who he is, who his friends are, and what he does, but occasionally he can't shake the feeling that he's not quite good enough, and there's something else he has to do, something he's missing. Nothing as stupid as a relationship, of course -- just something lasting. He calls it his Achilles complex. When Justin does allow himself to falter, he tends to cut off social contact besides a few of his closest friends until the worst of his depression has tided over; if there's anything he's learned from being an upperclass baby, it's that one presents their best face to the world.

BOGGART: A horde of snakes, or merely a Basilisk, fangs dripping with blood.
MIRROR OF ERISED: Text is about as forever as things get these days, and to have his name go down in history is frankly enthralling, so perhaps he might see himself holding a copy of a book entirely about him. Or maybe the Wizarding World in some semblance of peace again. Or a combination of the two. Either way, he'd be wearing those Gautier slacks that were ruined when he was being detained by the Ministry -- God, he loved those slacks.
PATRONUS: He's successfully made one before; it's an unusually large finch, which seems ridiculously unoriginal, but it's impressive wingspan proves good for warding off Dementors, and that's all that really matters in a Patronus.
ANIMAGUS: He isn't one, but if he was he has the sneaking suspicion he'd be either a mockingbird or a chaffinch.

POSITIVE TRAITS: Friendly, extroverted, hard-working, spontaneous, loyal, optimistic, child-like.
NEGATIVE TRAITS: Naïve, petulant, emotional, melodramatic, irresponsible.
biographical
MOTHER: Lady Mary Fletchley -- Justin's best friend. A carefree, happy-go-lucky woman that's obviously passed on her sense of humour and spritelike personality to her son, Mary was Justin's primary source of care and affection as a child, and as an adult she still remains one of his closest confidantes. Though he felt a bit betrayed when he found out she was dating without telling him, he's forgiven her, and finally feels close to her once more. 40, though she's aged miraculously well.
FATHER: Sir Peter Finch -- Justin's never really been close to his father. He's fairly sure the man loves him, but the best way Peter knows how to express this seems to be in money. He still talks to Peter, but their relationship is strained; still, if it weren't for his father's stern influence, Justin might have grown up completely spoiled by his mother. 44, though he doesn't look a day over 40.
SISTER: Hannah Eliza Ernestine Scripps -- His younger half-sister, whom he named (after two of his best mates, and Eliza for the hell of it). Though barely a few months old, Justin already dotes on his younger sibling; she looks just like her father, though, which makes it a bit hard for Justin to look at her and think of her as family. He keeps pictures of her, but hasn't been able to visit her since being forced to stay in Wizarding London.

The Finch family was missing something. It was hard to put a finger on; they had no shortage of children, clocking in at four prim-and-proper English youths, and certainly no lack of money; they were practically swimming in it. Still, Lady Elizabeth Cady Finch couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing from their perfect picture of English aristocracy. It came to her quite suddenly over dinner; patting her mouth idly with her napkin, the woman leaned over the table towards her eldest son and said, "Isn't it about time you got married, Peter?" This began a witch-hunt of sorts for someone suitable for Sir Peter Thomas Finch to marry; as heir apparent to the Finch estate, it was expected of him to take a wife sometime before he turned -- well, twenty-seven at the latest, Elizabeth concluded. The Scripps family was too nouveau-riche, and Peter didn't care at all for the Rutherford's youngest daughter; eventually they exhausted their resources, coming upon Lady Mary Fletchley, the second-youngest daughter of the upstanding Fletchley family.

Elizabeth was content with the decision; Peter, on the other hand, only married because of his mother's extreme pleasure over Mary's family, dowry and pleasing aesthetic. Mary agreed to marry Peter, half because she didn't have much of a choice and half because he was really rather attractive, and the two were wed on a moist spring day, the wedding overseen by Elizabeth's hawk eye. Everything went perfectly, until they realized they hated each other.

Peter hadn't counted on Mary being a free-thinking sprite, and Mary hadn't counted on Peter being a cold berk with a stick so far up his arse he was hacking up bark. Still, they had a duty to their families; they stayed married, even producing a child after the first tumultous three years of their marriage; cue Justin Augustus Charles Finch II, Esquire, a ruddy-faced baby with his mother's eyes and grin and his father's blonde-white curls. He was a gem of a child, really, and Peter was bent on raising him to be the perfect successor to the Finch name. Mary, on the other hand, wanted to raise her child in the loving environment she had been denied, and so after years of bickering the two finally split. Justin was five years old. They shared custody, Peter taking Justin for the majority of the summer and some holidays and Mary having him over Christmas and in June; Peter remained a large part of Justin's life financially, though it was really Mary and his father's maid that ended up raising him. As the divorce was a bit of a scandal in the lower upper crust, both the Finch and Fletchley families took little interest in the child, for fear of further tarnishing the family name. The issue of the child's name was quickly resolved; Justin asked to hyphenate when he was 9, to Finch-Fletchley because he was as much a Fletchley as a Finch, and anyone without knowledge of his family history would merely assume his name was double-barreled and therefore even more prestigious. Both families accepted.

Unlike other children born into failing families, Justin had a surprisingly good childhood; his parents, wealthy children of the English upperclass, doted on them as best they could. Mary showered him with gifts and affection, taking him on walks when the tension in the house was too much to bear and sleeping with him in the bed when Peter failed to return home from work -- Peter, on the other hand, spared no expense on his first and only son, offering him the best in materialistic things there were on the market. Even after Mary and Peter's divorce, he could hardly complain; Peter still gave him whatever he needed physically, and hols with his mother provided the love and care he needed, his father's elderly maid Evelyn (he called her Nan, though he reverted to Evey when in the presence of his ever-proper father) acting as a maternal force when not in the presence of his biological mother. Thus, despite the divorce, Justin grew to be a well-mannered and well-rounded youth. His mother, especially, fawned over him; she cooed that he'd be the next prime minister as he gurgled in his bassinet, lavishing him with praises when he learned to read at the tender age of three and congratulated him enthusiastically with every smiley-face stamped assignment he brought home from his primary. His father was proud of his progeny in his own way, praising him with a stiff affirmation that he would, in fact, make a good heir to the Finch name (Peter continued to refer to him as a Finch even after Justin asked his mom if he could hyphenate when he was 9). Justin was, in essence, their dream child. Until he turned eleven.

The letter from Hogwarts was dismissed as a joke by his father, who had custody of Justin when he recieved his letter. His mother, on the other hand, fell in love with the idea, accompanying Justin to Diagon Alley herself when Peter refused to and looking around with wonder at all the magical baubles, getting on with the assistance of a kindly witch with a First Year of her own. It was just what she had wanted for Justin; something unique, singularly fantastic -- what she wanted for herself, really, and though Peter pitched a fit over the idea of his son and heir attending some freak-school instead of Eton, glorious Eton, where Justin would be two years ahead of Prince William and in line to attend Oxford, perhaps Cambridge, his alma mater, Mary refused adamantly. Justin was a wizard and he was going to a magical school and that was that. Justin's first year of Hogwarts was awkward; he had little contact with his parents, as he was skittish around owls, and he was unsure about his fellows students, most of whom seemed to know a lot more about the magical world than he did. His only friends were Ernie Macmillan and Hannah Abbot, a pair of fellow Hufflepuffs he clung to in his first year in the Wizarding world.

His second year went much more swimmingly; as he grew more comfortable with Hogwarts, he grew more comfortable with himself, and soon proved to be a rather likeable person. Of course, this was before the ill-fated Dueling Club -- Justin, who had heard that Harry Potter was to be showered with nothing but praises (and whom he had attempted to make friends with in the first week of his second year), suddenly found himself on the receiving end on what looked like an attack from the Boy Who Lived. He grew sulky and introverted, not to mention constantly skittish; the only time he stopped moving was when he was Petrified by the Basilisk not a few months later, in the middle of arguing with Nearly-Headless Nick over whether or not Harry Potter was trustworthy. After all issues had been cleared later in the year, Justin felt ridiculously guilty over the entire ordeal; since then, he made several friendly overtures towards Harry, Ron and Hermione, in attempts of undoing his mistake -- to be completely honest, his guilt towards the trio was part of what drove him to join Dumbledore's Army three years following, though it's a descision he hardly regrets.

Justin's fourth year was the setting for the next event of note in his young life; Cedric Diggory, golden boy of Hufflepuff, died at the hands of Lord Voldemort during the Triwizard tournament. Justin was shocked -- like many of his Hufflepuff peers, he looked up to Cedric. Well-mannered, attractive, talented, intelligent; he was one of few Hufflepuffs that really stood out in the school, and now the king of their House was gone. The next year, however, signified a change within the House; suddenly Justin found himself as the center of attention, privy to praises usually reserved for Diggory himself on his multitude of talents. He was already fairly popular as a rule -- friendly, talkative, gentlemanly -- but he quite suddenly found himself the face of Hufflepuff, filling in shoes Cedric had left behind.

He was a good fit, really; most of the things that Cedric was, a few unique talents of his own, and first-and-foremost a dedication to his House. Justin was a Hufflepuff, tried and true. The only thing that was missing, really, was a bird on his arm -- which, of course, managed to be an enormous problem despite the fact that his life had taken a turn for the better. By the time he was in his sixth year, rumours started (as they're wont to do). It was brought up that he had never had a girlfriend (a valid point) and that someone had seen him snogging a male Ravenclaw prefect in the fourth floor corridor (possibly a valid point, but he was fairly sure it was in the dungeon hall). Justin had been fairly sure of his sexuality since -- well, frankly, since he was a child, though he didn't have a label for it then, but he'd been actively aware of it since he was 14. Still, he was all English aristocrat; his policy, like his families and their families and the lot of the English uppercrust, was "It's alright if you do it, just don't bloody well talk about it". He hardly affirmed rumours, nor did he outright deny them; an occasional gossip himself, both stances were complete murder for his reputation, whereas silence was possibly a maiming.

His sixth year brought more than just rumours into Justin's life; he learned near towards the middle of the year that his mother had not only been dating, but had decided to have a child with her new beau. After the expected feelings of betrayal and horror, Justin finally accepted the relationship, sure that he and his mother would never be on good terms again. Life saw fit to prove him wrong not long later, as one evening after dinner during the summer hols his mum took him aside and asked him to name her baby, as he wouldn't soon be having many of his own. The fact that his mother took so well to his coming out (or rather, being dragged forcefully out) improved their relationship tenfold, and made Justin somewhat partial towards Richard by association. Hannah Eliza Ernestine Scripps was born in November, taking her illegitimate father's name and the name Justin had given to her, but by then things in the Wizarding world had begun to go sour.

The summer turned bitter when the war started to seem to curve in Voldemort's favor -- a member of Dumbledore's Army and a strong supporter of Harry and his side, Justin had seen it coming after the death of Dumbledore in his sixth year, but never in such degrees. Harry seemed to vanish; Voldemort apparently got his hands on the Ministry, and Justin's background was thrown into question. He knew that he had to return to Hogwarts if he was to do anything useful; mitigated correspondence with Ginny, Neville and Luna only proved this. Ginny and Neville especially swore that Dumbledore's Army would make a triumphant return, and Justin didn't want to be locked away in Azkaban when it happened, nor cowering in his mothers basement. Out of Hogwarts, Justin returned to Cambridgeshire to live with his mother, taking a small job at a local bookstore to keep from feeling completely useless. He returned to the Wizarding World rarely, to visit mates and keep abreast on what was going on, which was a fine system for him until he was detained on a visit and interrogated by the Ministry for close to a month. Ernie MacMillan, bless him, swore up and down that Justin was related to his (very) Pureblooded family, providing falsified Order documents that 'proved' Justin was related to the MacMillans.

Paranoid and planning to keep as inconspicuous as possible, Justin took up residence in the Wizarding corners of West End after being released and, armed with documents proving his birth, got a job at Flourish & Blotts, which has, thus far, been working out quite well for him. He has yet to visit his family, for fear of being detained again, but corresponds with them regularly by both owl and Muggle mail.
